Why do I have brittle nails?
The nails reveals a lot of hidden information of a person's health state and doctor's will often during an examination check the patient's nails for visual clues.
To understand how the nails are affected during menopause it is important to understand how the nails grow. Nails grow from their roots in the white area on the nail known as the lunula. This is the white semicircle at the base of the nail. The nails are formed from a substance that is called keratin.
If you are healthy, this keratin will grow ata constant and uniform rate, but if you are sick or have an underlying health issue, the keratin will not grow uniformly and the nails will become brittle and cracked.
Characteristics of brittle nails
There are several symptoms that can be visible and be used for recognising menopause as a cause of brittle nails. Some of the most common symptoms includes:
* Feeling of dryness
* There forms ridges on the nail
* Color changes occurs
* Nails break, split or chip easily
* Nails appears sunken
Causes of brittle nails
Nails can change color, shape or texture due to a variety of conditions eg. nail polish, respiratory diseases(asthma), iron deficiency, infection or even just spending too much time with your hands in the water in a basin for instance.
When women are having brittle nails during the menopausal time, then the cause might be primarily from the hormonal changes during menopause. During menopause, the estrogen levels fluctuate dramatically and estrogen is also influencing water retention. Women get brittle nails due to a lack of enough moisture in her body or dehydration, thus if there is low levels of estrogen, so will there be low levels of water which will cause the brittle nails.
Brittle nails are also due to a lack of certain nutrients such as Vitamin C, folic acid, protein, fat, iron, calcium and stress.
Treatment of brittle nails
Since brittle nails are caused by the amount of moisture in the body, then correcting it should be possible quite easily....
Fortunately there is a cure for brittle nails. Brittle nails can be rectified with a change in diet, and by trying to lead a less stressful life. Obviously it is not always possible as our lifestyles of today are stress packed and we are deadline driven. Being deadline driven means that we can not always eat as we are supposed to, thus we have to look at other options too.
